Luke 15:11-31

As we study the scriptures we see a thread that runs throughout about a call to come home to a relasionship with God through his son Jesus Christ. Listen as Elder David Nichols shares his study of this theme through the bible.

* From the beginning Adam in the garden - Genesis 3:8-9
* Noah called to the Ark - Genesis 7:1
* Moses call by God through the Burning Bush - Exodus 3:3
* The calling of Samuel - I Samuel 3:4-11
* The calling of King David - 1 Samuel 16:11
* The Lord speaks to Isaiah - Isaiah 1:18-20

In the New Testament the theme continues:
* The call of the deciples - Mark 1:16-17
* The call to eternal life - John 5:37-40
* If any man thirsts - John 7:37-38
* The Father and Son will abide - John 14:23-26
* Jesus call the disciples to eat a meal - John 21:9-12
* Christians are called to a Holy Calling - 2 Timothy 1:9-10
* Called to fellowship - Revelation 3:20
* Called to return - Revelation 22:12

With all the calls shown in the scriptures the question we must ask is "How will we respond to the Lord's call?

Text: Hebrews 12:2-11

The Bible declares on many different pages that the child of God will endure many trials. How is the believer to respond in these situations?  To discipline is to train. Correction, education, hardship, opposition and suffering.

Three Truths:
1) Consider your example (vs. 3) - to think trough thoroughly. Who is our example? Why it is Jesus Christ.

2) Consider our blessings
A) the protection (vs. 4)
B) our inheritance (vs. 5-9)

3) Consider or benefits (vs. 10-11) - why are we corrected? For our good:
A) Holiness
B) Righteousness

Text: ... that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.

                     Philippians 3:10

Our Relationship With the Lord -  Questions to Consider:

1. What interests in our lives are competing with our desire to know Jesus Christ?

2.  What is the difference between being aware of Jesus Christ the Lord and knowing Jesus Christ your Lord?

3.  What words would accurately describe our current relationship with Jesus Christ?

Text: Ephesians 3:20

Listen as Brian Firpo, of Campus Outreach in Thailand, challenges us on how limited we view God and his plan for our lives.

* God wants to and will do more than we can ask or imagine. - he is so committed to our holiness that he will lead us through events that will cause us to trust him.

* God is committed to our putting him first and he will put us in circumstances that only he can carry us through.

* God is so committed to bringing glory to his name that he will use sinful vessels like us to bring glory to him.

What are you trusting God for today that is beyond your imagination?

Text: Hebrews 11-12

The Race-literally means to engage in an intense struggle.  This word emphasizes that the Christian race is filled with conflict and hardship.

“I have fought the good fight (agon), I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

Outline:
I. Look to our Examples (Chapter 11 Plus)
      A. Enoch-kept walking by faith
      B. Noah-kept building by faith
      C. Sarah-kept believing God to be      faithful concerning His promise
      D. Abraham-offered his son by faith
      E. Moses-identified with the suffering of God’s people by faith

 II. Heed the Lord’s Instruction
       A. Lay aside every encumbrance.
        ***encumbrance-refers to excess weight.
What excess weight is hindering us as we run in the race? (wrong priorities, family, friends, materialism)
B. Lay aside the sin.
***the sin- sin means to miss the mark.  Here in context it seems that the author is being very specific because of his use of  “the” being placed before the word sin.
*** John MacArthur comments on this phrase by saying, “If there is one particular sin that hinders the race of faith it is unbelief or doubting God.  Doubting and living in faith contradict each other.  Unbelief entangles the Christian’s feet so that he cannot run.”
C. Run with endurance
***endurance-to abide under.  It refers to abiding under hardship or suffering.

Text: Hebrews 10:26-31

Outline:
1st Consideration-Context:
* The slices of bread are easy digestible in comparison to this section of meat!
* The text speaks of judgment in 5 of the 6 verses.
* The certain judgment of God is not only referenced, but is evident throughout this letter and the whole of Scripture.

2nd Consideration-Analogy (vs. 28):
“If there is found in your midst, in any of your towns, which the LORD your God is giving you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, by transgressing His covenant, and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the heavenly host, which I have not commanded, and if it is told you and you have heard of it, then you shall inquire thoroughly,  And if it is true…on the evidence of two or three witnesses you shall stone them to death.”

3rd Consideration-Grammar:
* Willful-describes the deliberate intention to sin; or habitual sin.
* Knowledge-coveys a more exact or thorough knowledge.  Vine says, “the word suggest a more special recognition of something.”
* Trampled under foot-a phrase that communicates contempt for someone or something.
* Regarded unclean-refers to a conscious contempt for the sacrifice.  Can a Christian regard unclean the blood of Christ?
* He was sanctified-set apart.  This is the most difficult interpretative phrase for obvious reasons.
* Insulted the Spirit of Grace-the word insult here has the meaning of treating with reproach the Revealer of Truth.  It carries the meaning of being spiteful toward someone.

Three Views:
* Some view this passage as referring to a believer (one set apart) that in the final analysis loses their salvation as a result of forsaking the truth. (no example-explanation experience)
* Some view this passage as referring to a believer (one set apart) who through their lifestyle of sin trample under foot the Son of God resulting in judgment. (Ananias and Sapphira)
* Some view this passage as referring to a “professing Christian” that demonstrated separation, yet in the final analysis rejects openly the sacrifice of Christ. (Judas)

Conclusion:
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.  For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son…”  John 5:21-22

Application:
* The believer must take ownership of the responsibilities outlined in verses 19-25.
* The believer, knowing that tribulation is a certainty must endure, holding fast the gospel that has been delivered once for all time. (32-39)
* Certain judgment of the unbeliever should  impact our view of “making disciples.”
* Certain judgment of the believer should impact the way we live each day.

Text: Hebrews 10:19-25

1) Relationship with God (vs. 22) - "Let us draw near" This is done through access to God through Christ. We can draw near to God at any time we are not limited.
a) honesty - genuine
b) forgiveness - past, present and future. Sins debt has been paid in full.
c) honesty
2) Relationship to the world (vs. 23) - "the confession of our hope" - the Gospel. Hold on to the truth. (see also Ephesians 4:1-16)
We have knowledge not to be boastful but proclaim the truth.
3) Relationship to others (vs. 24) - "consider one another" - to direct my whole mind. Encouraged to love in good deeds.
Why is this encouragement important? (vs. 25) to exhort on another. This is impossible if we fail to fellowship with other believers.

Text: Hebrews 9:4; Numbers 1, 4, 16

To better understand the significance of Aaron's rod we need to go back to the book of Numbers. In Numbers chapter 1 we see a census was taken of all the tribes with the exception of the tribe of Levi (Numbers 1:47-54).
      * The Responsibilities: The tribe of Levi was given special responsibilities for the Tabernacle. In chapter 3 we see the Levites being called out to be the priests. Part of their job was to cover the Holy items from the Tabernacle. Anyone else who saw these items was warned of death. (Numbers 4:15). The Kohuthites were assigned the job of carrying the objects but only if the objects were covered because if they saw the items they too would die (Numbers 4:17-20)
      * The Rebellion (Numbers 16): Some of the children of Israel thought that Moses and Aaron had taken on too much authority.  They believed that they were holy and should be allowed to help with the priestly duties. Frankly there was jealousy in the tribe and their rebellion was against God (Numbers 16:11).
     * The Results - Judgment (Numbers 16:20-50) Next we see that the results of their actions was judgment from the Lord. First the instigators of the rebellion were killed when they and their families were swallowed up into the earth (Numbers 16:25-33). Second the 250 men who had joined them were consumed by fire from the Lord (Numbers 16:35). Even all this did not convince the people (Numbers 16:41-50) and as a result the Lord allowed a plague to kill 14,700 of them.
    * The Reminder - (Numbers 17) Here we see the budding of Aaron's Rod and how God showed that he intended for only the descendants of Aaron to be priests. We see that God does not tolerate sin and that there is always judgment for sin.

In 2 Peter 3 we see that the judgment of the world is coming and the only hope we have is to come to repentance before the Lord and to trust in the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Text: Hebrews 9:1-10

Today we are looking at the Holy of Holies and in particular the Golden Jar of Manna. (see also Exodus 16) God has personal involvement with the lives of his people.  We see the children of Israel complaining about hunger to the point of wanting to return to Egypt.  The Lord takes care of them by providing Manna from Heaven.  The Children of Israel were tested to see if they would collect more manna than they needed.

In Philippians 4 we see more on the provision of God. In the new Testament we see the believer's responsibility is to be anxious for nothing.  To be anxious is to sin. We are instead to be in prayer and supplication in thanksgiving, letting our requests be known to God.

The anxity of this world takes us away from the things listed in vs. 8-9. In verse 10 we see this is a process that does not happen instantly .  The world is looking to grab as much as it can from life now because they think that this life is all there is.  As believers we are to be content in whatever state that we are in whether it be a lot or a little. We are not to be content with things of this world but only through Christ.

Text: 1st Peter Chapter 1

While we are holy because Christ is holy we are also to remember that we have a responsiblity to personal holiness. In the first 12 verses we see that we have a living hope but begining in verse 13 we see the focus on personal holiness.

1) The Mandate
* Fix your hope fully on the grace - vs. 13
* Do not be conformed but obediant - vs. 14
* Be holy in all your conduct - vs. 15
* Why? Be holy for I am holy - vs. 16 - The measurement is God not man.

2) The Motivation
* We are not redeemed through gold or silver but the blood of Christ.
* Our motivation is the the life and blood of Jesus Christ.

3) The Method
*The word of the Lord endures forever - vs. 22
* In chapter 2: 1-2 we see the method is to desire the pure milk of the word.
* See also 2 Timothy 2: 14-15 - we need to be able to rightly handle the word of God.
* 2 Timothy 3: 12-16 - All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Our guest speaker is Rick Oglesby a former pastor, faculty member at Southeastern Bible College and past President of Carolina Bible College.

In this section of scripture we see the Good News of Jesus Christ. In vs. 8-11 we see insights into God's grace by looking at the personal statements of the apostle Paul.

* verse 8 - One who is like a miscarriage or an abortion. He was dead and useless untill God brought him out.
* in ourselves we are nothing but because of the grace of God and through the power of his son we have been made saints.  Even though the Corinthian church was a very disfunctional fellowship, they were still saints!
* We need to remember that we are holy because he has made us holy.

Text: Hebrews 7: 26-28

Here we look at the detail of our substitute.

1) The character of our substitute (vs. 26)
* holy, innocent or without evil.
* undefiled - without stain
* separated from sinners - separate with regard to space
* exalted above the heavens - lifted up

2) The sacrifice of our substitute (vs. 27)
* does not meet daily because he was once and for all the complete satisfaction. (see also Hebrews 9:12)

3) What should our response be? Worship - not just singing in church. see Romans 1:1-2. He is the perfect sacrifice and as such he is worthy.

Hebrews 7:11-28

In this section of Hebrews we see that the author desires to paint a picture of Christ that conveyed to the Jewish Christian audience the superiority of Christ's priesthood over the Levitical priesthood.

I. The author's desire
II. The author's description
a) "Indestructible Life" - This phrase conveys the impossibility of being destroyed. Jesus did what Aaron could not do.
b) "Better Hope" - This phrase conveys absolute assurance and points directly to Christ (I Timothy 1)
c) "Holds Permanently" - This phrase conveys that which does not pass away or cannot change. (Hebrews 7:23)
d) "Saved Forever" - This phrase emphasizes the power of Jesus Christ to keep us secure to the very end. (Hebrews 7:25)
e) "Make Intercession" - This phrase points to making an appeal to approach or make petition (see also John 17:11-19)

Text: Hebrews 7:1-10

Main Idea: The Priesthood of Jesus Christ is greater than that of Aaron because “the order of Melchizedek” is superior to “the order of Levi.”

1. Demonstrated in that Abraham the patriarch paid him tithes.
2. Demonstrated in that the lesser is blessed by the greater; Abraham blessed by Melchizedek. (see also John 8:31-59)
3. Demonstrated in that his priesthood had no recorded ending.
4. Demonstrated by the fact that although Levi collected tithes; he paid tithes to Melchizedek being in his father’s loins.
5. Galatians 3:10-29 Melchizedek’s superiority paved the way for the Jews to completely embrace Christ’s priesthood!

Hebrews 7:1-3
Key Word: Superior
Main Idea: The Priesthood of Jesus Christ is greater than that of Aaron because “the order of Melchizedek” is superior to “the order of Levi.”

I.  Melchizedek’s Identity.
A. not the preincarnate Christ.
B. not an Angel.
C. He was King of Righteousness.
D. He was King of Salem - meaning King of Peace
E. He was High Priest of El Elyon.
1.  Melchizedek’s blessing of Abraham was the exercise of
his priesthood.
2.  Abraham’s paying tithes was the recognition of his    priesthood.
3.  According to Psalm 110:4,  which is a prophetic passage     the priesthood of Christ has no end.

Interesting Observation: Melchizedek met Abraham with bread and wine.

Text: Hebrews 6:12

1)Examples of Faith
* The Author’s Challenge- Diligence
* The Author’s Caution-Sluggish
* The Author’s Concern-Imitators

2)Imitators of Faith
*Definition-the word imitator describes one who follows.  In this context the author is encouraging  his readers to follow examples of faith as they pursue diligence.  Patience in this context is the result of faith not separate from it and certainly anticipates inheriting the promises!

3)An Example of Faith-Abraham
* Obedience-Genesis 12 describes the initial response of Abraham to God.
* Hebrews 11:8- “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
*Trust-Genesis 22 records the trust that Abraham had in His God.  He trusted the Lord to provide.
* Genesis 22- “Abraham said as he responded to his son Issac, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering.”

4) Considerations About Those We Follow:
* Depth-what is the testimony concerning their vertical relationship?
* Failure-what is their response to failure or failures in life?
* Investment-are they reproducing themselves in the lives of others?
* Perseverance-what is their response to difficult times or times of suffering in life?
* Wisdom-does their decision making evidence faith resulting in patience?

Text: Hebrews 6:11-12a

Our love toward others will grow as our love for the Lord grows (vs. 10) As we come to verse 11 we see the heart of the author, "we desire" - He wants them to know the truth that Jesus Christ is the best and there is none more worthy. While the rest of the world has no real purpose we know that as believers we have a hope (vs.11).

We also see that we are to have diligence - extra ordinary  (pursuit) commitment. Example of an athlete in training. See also 2 Peter 1:1-10. In verse 10 we see the call for diligence. Back in Hebrews (vs.12) we see the enemy of diligence is sluggishness (vs.12).

Five ways to avoid sluggishness:

1. We need to bare fruit.
2. We need to depend on him - in prayer.
3. We await his return at any moment.
4. We need to meditate on him.
5. We need to share the gospel.

Text: Ephesians 5:21-24; Hebrews 13:17

Outline:
* Who is the head of the church? - It is Christ (vs.22)
* We receive word from God from his word ,the Bible, not from the words of men.
* What does this mean to us? (vs 24)  - We are to be subject (abide under) to Christ.

Looking at Hebrews 13:17
* Elders (Sheppards) are to feed, care for and protect.
* Deacons are servants
* What is the responsibility of the church - to be obedient to your leaders because they will give an account to God

Text: Luke 24:36-48; Acts2:22-33

Listen as Pastor Thad Blount preaches this Easter on the words of Jesus after his resurrection.

1)Christ discusses the reliability of the scriptures (vs. 44)
2) Jesus focus after the resurrection was on the gospel message (vs. 46).
3) Was this information successful? (see Acts 2:22-33)
* If you believe in something then you are going to tell others about it. In this passage in Acts we see that Jesus message did have an impact.  *Even today we can rely on the scriptures and there is power in the gospel.

Luke 19:1-10

Responses

1st- Zaccheus responds in obedience and with joy. Some translations use the word gladly; however the better translation would be he being Zaccheus received Him rejoicing.

2nd- The crowd responds by grumbling. They are outraged that He would disgrace Himself by not only going to the house of a sinner but staying there overnight; which leads us to Zaccheus conversion.

Transformation/Security/Purpose

It is rather genius that the Holy Spirit would include the evidence of Zaccheus transformation. For the evidence here is not only overwhelming but serves as an example to all Christians of the importance of a transformed life.

Evidence #1- He confesses Jesus as Lord. The word stopped in verse 8 indicates he took a stand. He says you are my Lord. How awesome is this! Paul indicates in Romans that is certainly the action of a believer. (Romans 10:9-10)

Evidence #2- He says that half of my possessions I will give to the poor. What a change. What a great indication of self-denial. Let’s remember something very important. The text reveals that Zaccheus is a wealthy man. He went from being selfish to selfless. He went from being a taker to a giver. (Contrast the rich young ruler in chapter 18) This action in Zaccheus life is huge; but it doesn’t stop their. What about the other half of his wealth. This is what’s amazing!

Evidence #3- He says, “if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.” Under Old Testament Law he could have given back everything plus one fifth. In doing so he would have been right on; however he puts himself in the category of a robber. The law said if you robbed someone with violence and destruction a fourfold restitution was required. Zaccheus judges himself as needing to give back 4 fold or 400 percent. His attitude is not how little can I get away with, but I want to give back with overflowing.

Security

Jesus says in verse 9 “salvation has come to this house; because he too is a son of Abraham.” What is Jesus saying? Well in Romans 2:28 the Bible unveils that “a Jew is not a Jew who is one outwardly, but is one inwardly. In other words it’s not about circumcision and religion on the outside, but it’s about the circumcision of the heart and relationship. Galatians 3:6-7 says, “Even so Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure(know) that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.”

Text: Luke 19:1-10

Who was the man called Zacchaeus who climbed a tree so that he could see the Lord Jesus? Is there more to this familiar story than what you might think with a casual reading of the story?  This week and next week Pastor Thad takes a closer look at this man called Zacchaeus and his calling out by Jesus.

Notes:
* Jericho - known as "Little Paradise", was a crossroads city.
* Zacchaeus - means: clean, innocent, pure.
* Occupation - Chief Tax Collector - an occupation known for corruption and theft.
* His Desire - He wanted to see Jesus.  This was an ongoing process, not just a one time or spontaneous action.
* His short stature (height) forced him to climb a tree in order to see over the crowd.
* Jesus also wanted to see him
* Lack of an introduction - Jesus called him by name because of his omniscience. He had known Zacchaeus before he was even formed. See also John 1:43-50 and Jerimiah 1:5.
* In Psalm 139 we see that God does not have to observe us to get to know us but rather he knows us completely.  He knows what we are going to say before we utter the words.  He knows the number of our days.
* Jesus knew that Zacchaeus would be in the tree that day.

Text: Acts 17:1-9

The evangelical church of today needs to get back to the basics. Methodology has trumped theology, with gimmicks being emphasized over the gospel. Nothing new is needed except to get back to the basics.

Outline:
1) Return to the word of God (vs.2)
- It's our responsibility to take the word of God to the world

2) Committed to the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ (vs.3)
- There is no substitute - see also I Thessalonians 2
- We must be committed to the truth

3) The results - Upset the world (vs.6)

Text: 2 Kings 6:24 - 7:12

We live in very treacherous times. Will these times bring out the best or the worst in us?  Listen as Dr. Daniel P. Wicher, Jr. President of C.A.M. International brings us a message from God's word challenging us as Christians to rise to the times in which we live.

Outline:
I. Extreme Hunger.
* God is God and God is good.
* God is sovereign over all.
* The Lord works in crisis - example of the Mexico City earthquake.

II. God Doesn't Look at Position or Power When Choosing His Agents but Rather He looks at the Heart.
* Example of Jose Luis
* God used the lepers.
* God uses the humble.

III. Motives to Share the Gospel - 2 Corinthians 5:11-19.
* Fear of the Lord. (vs. 11)
* Love of Christ. (vs. 14)
* Divine Perspective (vs. 16)

The example of William Carey During these trying times we can either go down into the pit or we can hold the rope.

As believers we should be balanced, close to God, and engaged.

Text: Acts 17:7-14; 19:9-23

What are the challenges of sharing the gospel in today's secular culture? The church today is lax in its efforts to confront the world. The question that Christians should ask themselves is: Does the world upset you or do you upset the world?
Listen as Bob Waldrep of The Crosswinds Foundation  for Faith and Culture challenges us to go out and bring the truth of God's word to a lost and dying world.

The example of Paul:
1) We see he shared with those who are churched.
2) We see that he shared with those who are unchurched.
3) What did the three cities have in common? - The word was proclaimed in such a way that those who heard it reacted to it.
4) Four things that will happen:
a) There will be opposition
b) There will be those who are persuaded.
c) Lives will be changed.
d) The world will be upset.

Text: Hebrews 6:4-8

1. What We Know
* Setting - The author was familiar with the history of these people.
* “But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings...”(Heb. 10:32-34)
* Internal evidence indicates that the date of writing would have been prior to the destruction of the temple in 70; which is significant because of the lengthy discussion of the Jesus as our Great High Priest.
* Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer gifts according to the law;...” (Heb. 8:4; 9:6-9)

2.  Context
* Jesus is a qualified, victorious, and perfect high priest that desires us to approach Him. (vs. 14-16)
* The author’s desire is to teach his readers concerning Melchizedek. (Heb. 5:11)
* The author is concerned about the lack of progress in their lives. (Heb. 5:12-6:3)

3. They are Saved, but Immature?
* Language- the language of verses 4-5 seem to indicate that these are believers.
* Every one of these statements is in a tense indicating these things are never repeated acts of God’s working.
* Verse 6 does indicate that something is impossible.  What is it?

Text: Hebrews 6:4-8

As we come to this part of the book of Hebrews we need to put on our "spiritual hard hats".  Many theologians skip over this part of Hebrews because of it's difficulty . In looking at this section we need to remember the context in which the writer was speaking and it is within the context of talking to Christian Believers.

1) Some hold to the idea that the people described in these verses are Christians who actually lose their salvation.
* If God saved you then you can't lose your salvation because it depends on God.  If you saved yourself then you can lose it because it depends on you.

2) Dangers of a Man Centered Theology.
a) Leads to frustration and fear.
b) Can and does produce a legalistic faith.
c) Hinders spiritual growth.
d) Elliminates the joy of serving the Lord.
e) Takes the "good news" out of the gospel

3) A look at John 10: 1-30
a) He calls his own sheep by name.
b) He gives eternal life (vs. 28).
c) No one can take them away (vs. 29) .

Text: Hebrews 5:11 - 6:3

It's time to embrace Christianity it's time to grow up.  This is what the author of Hebrews is talking about in this section of scripture.

1. The Author's Desire (5:11) - The author has gone from teaching to preaching. (Preaching is when one is challenged to act of the knowledge that one knows.)
2. The Author's Diagnosis - (5:12-14) they were immature, slow, sluggish. (see also 1 Cor. 3:1-4) They were still on a milk diet.  The question is why were they not eating any meat? By this time they should have been teachers and having an impact on the lives of others.

* Is maturity being reflected in our lives today? Why is the church of toady in trouble?  Because it is not acting on the knowledge that it has.

3. A Lack of Discernment - (vs. 14) They lacked the practice and experience to gain proper discernment.  (see also 2 Timothy 2:20-23) There are many out there who are false.

*How do you know if you are stagnant?
- Do you have a desire for the word of God?
- Do you long to obey the commands of God?

Text: Hebrews 4:14 - 5:3

In the early days of the church there were many Jewish Christians who had been taught (while Jews) that they needed a high priest.  As they transitioned from religion to relationship they had to be taught about the fact that Jesus is the perfect High Priest.

Jesus is the perfect high priest because:
* He is one who is not a sinner and one who never dies and as such will never need to be replaced.
*In Matthew 4:1 we see that Jesus was sinless even though he was tempted.
* In Hebrews 7 we see that Jesus is holy. We also see that he is without stain (Hebrews 7:27). This shows his permanent state of holiness.
* He is exalted above the heavens - He is higher than the heavens.

Even though Christ has this standing as the perfect high priest we need to never forget that he is there for us as Christians. We need to remember that there is 1) Help available - the best help we can give someone is the sharing of the word (Bible). 2) We need to point people to the savior.

Text: Hebrews 4:14-5:4

This week we return to our study in the book of Hebrews. So far we have seen that Jesus is far better than all ways.  In this section we are going to see that he is better than the Old Testament Priests.

1: One: There is one mediator between God and man - Jesus Christ.
*He can be the only intercessor between God and man.

2: Terms of Three: The contrast between the old and the new.
*In the old the priest had to enter the Holy of Holies yearly.
*Jesus on the other hand after had rose ascended to the right hand of God the father. This was done once for all.
* He ascended through the atmosphere then outer space and then heaven to take his seat.  The old Testament Priests did not sit down while in the Holy of Holies.
* We need to hold fast to our confession (Heb. 4:14)

Text: Matthew 6:25-34

Do you find yourself facing worries about life?  Are you anxious about the future?  What does the bible have to say about anxiety? Listen as Elder Robbie Roberts brings us a message on what Jesus said about being anxious as a believer.

1. Worry is unfaithful because our master is God.
2. God is our Faithful provider.
* Satan is our adversary - The example of Job
3. Worry is wrong because of our Faith.

The example of little faith - Matthew 8:23-27
*Jesus calms the storm

He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

Ezekiel 18:31-32
In many places throughout the world today Christians are being killed for being followers of Christ.  While this level of persecution is not the norm in the United States it does tend to hold Christianity in low regard. What can we learn from the people of Judah? Listen as Dean Self explains.

* God has often held back judgment even though we brazenly disobey God.
* God took no joy in judging and calls again and again for repentance.
* Judah would not listen.
* Judah would be destroyed not because of the sins of their fathers but because of their own sin. (Ez. 18:24)
* Even the presence of Godly men could not save them. (Ez. 14:12-14)
* Her armies were helpless against her enemies.
* Her wealth could not buy another minute of freedom (Ez. 7:19)
* God would bring her enemies into Jerusalem to occupy their lands and home.(Ez. 7:21, 24)
* Four great punishments will fall on them (Ez. 14:21)
a) Always at war
b) Famine
c) Ravenous beast will overtake the land
d) Plagues

Text: 2 Timothy 3:1-2, Hebrews 13:1-5

In the second part of Understanding the Times we look at The Love of Money.

Man is consumed with various aspects of money, from making it, to saving it, to spending it, and having too little of it. The Bible speaks on the subject of money over 1600 times making it one of the most talked about subjects in the scriptures.

* A lover of money means to be a friend of silver/greedy for gain. Examples of Judas, Ananias and Sapphira.

I. The Warning:
- Exodus 5:10 - he who loves money will never be satisfied with money.
- Mark 7:21 - for out of the heart of men... deeds of coveting/greed.
- Luke 16:13-15 - You cannot love God and riches. The old man is dead to greed and greed amounts to idolatry.
- 1 Timothy 6:10 - We need to remember that God owns it all.

II. The Wisdom:
Hebrews 13:1-5  - without covetousness, be content
1) Content means to be enough, sufficient, satisfied.
2) Content is in the present tense. It is a continual attitude of satisfaction
- example of Paul in Philippians 4 "I have learned to be content in whatever state that I am."
3) To be content is avalible through the promises of God - "I will never leave you nor forsake you" We can confidently say that "the Lord is my helper, I will not fear for what can man do to me?" Example of David vs. Goliath.

Text: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 2 Tim 3:1-4

Today's focus: Lovers of Self

There are times when it helps to look at the opposite of something when trying to understand what is right (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). As Christians do we stand out in a crowd or do we blend in with the world.

- The Last Days - a terrible or perilous time - a time of violence
Men will have a great love for themselves
- People are naturally very concerned about themselves

1)  The love of the believer is to be directed - Mark 12:28-31
* Directed not at self but toward the Lord

2)  We can show that we are different by denying self - Mark 8:34-36.
* This is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit

3)  We have a devotion to living for him - 2 Cor. 5:14-15

We have a purpose in life: We love God, die to self, and live for him.

Psalm 32

Listen as Pastor Thad Blount examines Psalm 32 and where David was in his life as he wrote this important Psalm.

Outline:

1. A continued state of silence - a period of silence - this can be from living in a state of denial. (vs.3)

2. The effects (vs. 3)
* wasted away - to wear out
* groaning - continuous as an animal that has been hurt
* loss of vitality - strength is gone
* God's hand was on him day and night (vs. 4) - David could not escape God

Today ask the Lord to search you and know you.

Text: I Thessalonians 1:2-3; 9-10

In part 4 of the series "Marks of a Healthy Church" we see that the early Christians were living in hope. Today people put their hope in the almighty dollar not the Lord Almighty.

Hope is built on:
1) Jesus Christ is alive 1 Cor.15:12-19
2) Jesus is coming again. Does the church today live expecting the return of Christ?

He has rescued us from Hell and from the tribulation:
1) I Thessalonians 5:1-10 "God did not appoint us for wrath"
2) It is this hope that motivates us. It is the reason we should fish for men

Are you living in hope today?

Text: I Thessalonians 1:2-3

In part 3 of the series "Marks of a Healthy Church" we see that not only did the Christians leave their mark but they also fished for men.

Four areas to be a fisher of men:
1) They had a balance of life.
2) They were committed to being heard (vs.8). The message was blasted out as a trumpet.
3) They trumpeted forth the word of the Lord. They turned to the to the sovereign from idols.(see also John 7:40-52 and 8:12-26)
4) They were making a difference. They were known everywhere.

To point the way to truth we should:
1) Honesty - Tell the truth.
2) Urgency - We don't know when the Lord may return.
3) Pray.

Are you truly committed to fishing for men today?

Text: I Thessalonians 1:2-3

As we continue looking at the marks of a healthy church we see in vs. 2 the term "labor of love".  This labor of love by the church at Thessalonica was expressed toward other believers (verse 6).

In verse 7 we see the word "example" - This word means to leave a visible impression.  Who has left a mark on you? See also i Timothy 4:12- for the example of Timothy and how he was to be an example.

Seven areas to be an example:
1) Mindset of serving.
2) Mindset of encouragement.
3) A devotion to one another.
4) The forgiving of one another (Ephesians 4:32).
5) To be committed to one another.
6) To admonish one another. (Galatians 6)
7) We comfort one another through trials and tribulations. (2 Cor 1:3-7)

Text: Thessalonians 1

How is the church in the 21st Century different from the 1st Century church? Listen as Pastor Thad Blount first has a question and discussion session with the Springville Road congregation before teaching on the example of of the Church at Thessalonica.

What are the keys to a healthy church?
The first thing we see is that they put their faith into practice. (vs. 3)
* Their work of faith is explained (vs. 9)
Serve - one who is bound to another.
* A life of continual service - no retirement.
* A life of complete service - open to whatever God wants you to do.
* A life of whole-hearted service - not half way.
* Their service was motivated by worship (vs. 4-5) (See also Mark 10:35-)

Text: Colossians 3:1-4; 12-14

Paul writes to believers telling them what is important to us as believers and as the body of Christ.

Christian Character:
1. Compassion-describes a person having a sensitivity toward others.

Two Keys to Compassion:
*Cannot be haughty
*Cannot be isolated from others

2. Kindness-describes a person with a helpful spirit which seeks to meet the needs of others.

3. Humility-to think lowly; the esteeming of one’s self as small.

“True humility is evidenced in the subjection of self under the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.”  -  Vines

4. Gentleness-in the New Testament is used of genuine consideration for others.

5. Patience-a state of calm and quietness in the face of a difficult circumstance.

“Continue to put up with others, remembering the Lord’s longsuffering with you.”  Spurgeon

6. Bearing with one another-means to put up with someone; to hold out in spite of complaints or indifference.

I Corinthians 4:12- “and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure…”

7. Forgiveness-to release from a debt.  To give freely and unconditionally or to bestow as a gift of grace.

*It means we are not to bring up to the person whom we have forgiven the thing we forgave.

*That we do not tell anybody about the matter that is forgiven.

8. Love-refers to our seeking to do for others.  This would include helping those within the body for the purpose of demonstrating and maintaining unity.

1) We stand on Christ the Solid Rock.  While the road is wide that leads to destruction the way is narrow that leads to life.
2) It is relationship that sustains us during the winds of change.
3) Jesus warns us to be aware of false prophets and we need to be aware of the signs of warning.

Text: Ephesians 5:18

What is missing in the life of some Christians today is a clear biblical understanding of the Holy Spirit. There are four main areas of ministry of the Holy Spirit.
1) Ministry of Regeneration
2) Ministry of Baptism
3) The Holy Spirit indwells the believer.
4) Ministry of Sealing

The Walk
1) Walk worthy (Eph. 4:1)
2) Walk not as the gentiles (Eph. 4:17)
3) Walk in love (Eph. 5:1)
4) We were once dead (Eph. 5:14)
5) Be careful how you walk (Eph. 5:17-18)

Submitting - to one another and to the Lord. (see also Phil. 2)

Text: Revelation 21

For the Christian our best life is not on this earth but is the life to come when we are in Heaven. As Christians we are to have the proper perspective of this life.
Outline:

1) Absence (vs. 1&4) - The old world is characterized by sin but the new world will be perfect. It is characterized by the absence of those who have not trusted in Christ for their salvation. In verse 4 we see that there is no more death.

2) Continual Presence - we will continually enjoy the presence of the Lord (vs. 2) Are we ready for the presence of the Lord?  See also Revelation 21:5 where we see that these words are faithful and true.

Text: Romans 9:1-3

Outline:

1. A Heart of Sincerity. (vs. 1)
Paul looked to Christ. The witness of Paul's sincerity or honesty was the Holy Spirit. His desire was that they would know the truth. (see also Acts 26:19-28)
2. A Heart of Sorrow. (vs. 2)
Because they did not know Christ. Christians today should be saddened for the world because of the reality of Hell.
3. A Heart of Sacrifice. (vs. 3)
(see also Romans 8:35-39) Paul was willing to be destroyed in order to save his countrymen. Is the church today active in planting ans watering seeds? See Col. 4:2-4 we should pray for the opening of doors.

While ownership of the Bible is very high within the United States, reading and studying the Bible is not. Believers are to have a regular intake of the Word of God. Paul tells Timothy that all scripture is useful and profitable. What does it mean to be profitable?

1) Profitable for what is right - doctrine - truth.
The example of the Bereans - They were eager and studied the scriptures daily.
2) Profitable for reproof - to bring to light. Tells us when we are out of balance.
3) Profitable for correction. To get right - to restore to an upright position. See also Revelation 2:11- and the example of the church of Ephesus.
4) Profitable for training and righteousness. Instruction and training - to give guidance.  This emphasizes education and training in righteousness, how we are to do right.  This is to bring about change so that we may be prepared for every good work.

We need to take time to chew on the word of God. Let us not forget what God has called us to.

Text: Luke 14:25-33

These days with rising energy and food prices we all have to watch the costs of the items we buy.  Just as we are now counting the cost of material goods we should also assess the cost of being a follower of Christ.  In Luke 14 Jesus told the multitude that they must count the cost of being one of his disciples.

Outline:
1. What Jesus told the crowd. - Their love for Christ must exceed their love for any others (vs. 26). They must carry their own cross (vs. 27) - A willingness to sacrifice and the example of Graham Staines.
2. Message to the disciples. See also 2 Corinthians 11:24 and the example of Paul.
3. Christ's own costs. See also Isaiah 53

Text: Hebrews 13:7-14

Listen as Bob Waldrep of Crosswinds Foundation for Faith and Culture brings us up to date with his new ministry and how the church needs to look beyond itself in order to proclaim the gospel to a lost world.

What is a cultural crosswind? What should the church do when hit by the crosswinds of the world?  Should the church change course or correct and continue in the right direction.  In the Thirteenth chapter of Hebrews we see that we are to go "outside the camp". Where did Jesus do a large amount of his ministry?

The church of today has become a group of "Cultural Christians" who tend to stay within their own group.  What did Jesus have to say about this?  See John 17:14-26.

1) We must be careful to not abandon the faithful (as we try to reach the culture).
2) We must not abandon Christ.
3) We don't abandon sound doctrine

Text: Romans 5:1-5

We come together as a church for the purpose of glorifying God.  To be justified is to be declared righteous by faith. This is done only through the work of Jesus Christ.  Too many times we try to rely on our own strength but our hope does not rely on us but the Lord Jesus Christ. Listen as Paster Thad discusses justification and why we should celebrate the Lord's Supper.

Text: I Corinthians 11:3 and Genesis 2:4-24

Today's culture thinks of marriage in terms of popular television shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond and Desperate Housewives but these shows are not the model that we should be following. As Christians we are to base our marriages on scripture and not on the culture in which we live.

* Culture has redefined our marriages.
* There is now a try and see mentality.
* There is a me first mentality.
* There does not seem to be a distinct role for men and women today.

Men and women are equal in value yet different in roles.

* The head of man is Christ - (Romans 14:11 and Philippians 2:9-11) - when it comes to submission we usually think of wives submitting to the husbands but the truth is that men are to submit to Christ.
* The head of Christ is God - (John 4:34; John 5:19; John 6:38)
* The head of women is man
* We must embrace the gospel in order for marriage to work.

Text: 2 Corinthians 5:16 - 6:10

As Christians we constantly face the problem of losing our perspective on life.  One of the ways that we can help to maintain a proper Godly perspective is to remember that we are called to be ambassadors for Christ.  Listen as one of our church members, Robbie Roberts, speaks on this subject.

Outline:
1) What is an ambassador? - Greek word Presbus - or old man.  Ambassadors were usually older and wiser men who knew the King's positions very well. Ambassadors are sent out from their homeland to serve in a foreign land. Ambassadors are not important for who they are but for who they represent.

2) Who are Ambassadors for Christ?  As Christians we all are. (see verse 5:18) - "given us"

3) What is the Message? - The Ministry of reconciliation. (see verse 5:18-19) Reconciliation can be thought of as the theme of Christianity. Christians must be reconciled to God in order to be saved.  How is this possible?  (see verse 5:21)

4) For How Long is the Message of Reconciliation Available? - Now is the time, today is the day of salvation.

5) The Endurance of the Ambassador. (read verses 6:3-6) - Patience or endurance is the Greek word Hupomone. This word has 3 facets of meaning: a) to bear up under hard labor. b) To survive the shock of battle. c) To remain steadfast in the face of death.

Text: Colossians 3:17
What are you handing down to those in your family? There is nothing more important than to give them a Godly legacy. Listen as Pastor Thad continues this study on the family.

Review:
* Legacy - something passed down from one generation to another. Are you rooted in Christ? (see Col. 2:6-7)

* A Key Verse - Colossians 3:17 “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”
Word - meaning anything spoken; referring to the tongue. (see also James 3)
Deed  - meaning one’s actions or behavior.

* What a father or mother does in moderation; a child could completely embrace.

This Week:
* Issues That Cloud A Godly Legacy

    1) Materialism - the theory that physical well-being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life.
    2) Busyness - one who is engaged in much activity; at times to the point of being distracted.
    3) Tolerance - leeway for variation from a certain standard.
    4) Feminism - the belief in the social, political, economic and religious equality of the sexes.
    5) Addictions - the condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something
    6) Career - an individual’s course or progress through life.  It is traditionally seen as a course of successive situations that make up a person’s work life

* A Godly Example - Mary - Luke 1

    1) She acknowledges He is worthy of glory and honor.
    2) She acknowledges that He is Savior.
    3) She acknowledges His greatness.
    4) She acknowledges His sovereignty.

Text: Hebrews 4:12-13

Last week we learned that we should diligently pursue rest by faith.  The question we ask this week is why? The answer is found in Hebrews 4:12-13.

Outline:
1) The word of God is Living (vs. 12)
*Living and active.  The word is present tense indicating relevance for today.  Today people don't want to hear the word because it is controversial.
2) The word of God is Active
* the Greek word is where we get the English word for energy.  It works!
3) The word of God Penetrates.
* It never fails to cut.
4) The word of God Judges.
* It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  To think is to ponder or to think out. The English word for reflection comes from this. Think about sitting out under the stars while considering the universe. Intentions have more to do with thinking that leads to actions.  Exposing the intentions of the heart.
5) The word of God Sees. (vs.13)
* The example of the garden of Eden and Jonah. Is it truly possible to hide from God? No! All things are open and laid bare.  The example of an animal about to be sacrificed. There is nothing hidden from God and I must rest in that fact.
** See also Psalm 139: 1-16. How much does he know us?  The word of God is powerful, it sees the depths.

Text: Hebrews 4:1-11

Listen as Pastor Thad brings a message from the book of Hebrews on the subject of "rest".  Are you resting on God or are you resting on yourself?

Outline:
I. Rest Established
3a-Rest for those who believe
3b-No Rest because of unbelief
4-Rest established by God
“By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all the work which He had done.  Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.?
5-No Rest-Author reiterates Israel’s unbelief
6a-Rest remains for some
6b-No Rest for those disobedient
7a-Rest offered-What’s the significance of this offer as mentioned in verse 7?

1. The time David wrote Psalm 95 was 3-400 years after Israel entered the land.
2. Even after their disobedience and entrance into the land via Joshua; Rest is still being offered.
3. Rest God offered is more than a piece of land as evident from Psalm 95.
4. The offer to Rest is still appropriate at the time of this letter and as the text indicates in verses 1 and 6 still available now.

II. Rest Available
* Rest is presently available. Entering in verse one is present tense; indicating that the rest available is neither past or future but a present opportunity for those believing. (verse 1)
* Rest is possible as one hears the good news (the gospel) and has faith. (verse 2)
* Rest does not mean absence of activity; but as the author establishes in verse 9; Rest means enjoyment of relationship.

III. Rest Brings Strong Exhortation
* Let us fear.  Homer Kent writes, “the fear spoken of is not terror but Godly fear which produces soberness and solemn recognition of God’s awesomeness.?
* Let us be diligent. (labor) John MacArthur writes, “the passage is not teaching that you can work to salvation or toward rest, but that you diligently enter in by faith alone.?

IV. Practical Thoughts on Rest
* Rest means no more trying to please God by fleshly works.  We are free from legalism; we rest in grace.
* Rest means to be free from the worry of losing salvation and free from the worry’s of every day life.
* Rest is to have absolute confidence that God does not change.
* Rest means that we trust in Him.

Text: Hebrews 3:1-19

As Christians are we to be involved in each others lives? Yes we are; as we learn from our study in the book of Hebrews. In Chapter 3 we see both instruction and warning.  In vs. 13 we see the word "exhort"

1) Exhortation is a command not a suggestion - to encourage means to "draw along side".  Encouragement is commanded 55 times in the New Testament.

2) The command comes with a sense of urgency. - notice the use of the word "today" in chapters 3 and 4.

3) There is purpose for encouragement.
A) the author is removed from the equation.
B) The author speaks of the serious nature of this. - Hardened condition "dry and stiff"
C) The power of sin. (see Hebrews 12:1)

Why should we encourage?
1) It is commanded
2) We never know who is on the receiving end.  Never discount what impact you might have on others.

Text: Hebrews 3:7-19

Listen as Pastor Thad explains this difficult section from the book of Hebrews as the writer shows his concern for the reader with warnings.

* Example of the Israelites - "went astray in their hearts"
* The "rest"
* Use of the word "we" in chapter 2 of Hebrews
* "you who have an unbelieving heart"
* Are the readers believers or nonbelievers?
* From religion to relationship
* Our faith does not change depending on the situation we are in
* A true test of whether you believe something is your faithfulness  to that belief
* Partakers we are if we hold fast in our confidence to the end.

Text: I Corinthians 15:1-11

Is your life different as a result of the resurrection? That is a question we must ask ourselves on a daily basis. Looking at the apostle Paul we see:

1. A life of declaration. (vs. 1-2)
2. A life of dedication. (vs. 3-4)
3. A man of humility. (vs. 5-11)

Are you able to say "Thank you God for my salvation."?

Text: Philippians 1:12-14 Acts 7:57-8:3; 9:1-8

Listen to part 2 of "Living as a Witness" as Rob Caine talks about why I should live as a witness and how I should live as a witness.

1) Why are we to live as witnesses for Christ? (Phil 1:12)
* To advance the gospel
* Why is the purpose of the church & believers? - to live a holy life?, to glorify God?, to fellowship with the Lord?, to worship? - All of these things can be done better in Heaven so this cannot be the answer. The one thing that we can do better here than in Heaven is to be a witness. (see Mathew 28:18-20)

2) How do we live as witnesses? (Phil 1:12-14)
* Where we are.
* Notice where Paul was when he wrote these verses. (See Acts21:27- Acts 28:30) The life and example of Paul.
* As a result our lives will be an encouragement to others.(Phil 1:14)

Text: Matthew 10:32-33

Just what does it mean to "confess"?  The reality of one's conversion is something that you cannot afford to be wrong about because to be wrong is to be condemned to an eternity apart from God in Hell.

“Confession has reference to the specific statement of faith that Jesus Christ is the only Savior and Lord!?  -    S. Lewis Johnson

Luther said that “confession is the principle work of faith.?

Calvin added that “no one can believe with the heart without confessing with the mouth.  It is a natural consequence of faith.?

I. Confession

     A. Definition-to say the same and so as to agree in one’s statement.

     B. Key-Confession represents the open expression of one’s allegiance to a proposition or a person.

II.  Occurrence

     A.  “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good  confession in the presence of many witnesses.?  -  I Timothy 6:12

     B.  “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession.?  -  Hebrews 3:1

    C.  “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.? - Hebrews 4:14

    D.  “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.? - Hebrews 10:23

III.  Assurance

“...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.?   - Romans 10:9-10

IV.  Questions

       A.  When was the first time you confessed Jesus as Lord, and believed in your heart God raised Him from the dead?
       B.  What is your confession today?     Is it the same?
       C.  What have been some obstacles to your continual confession?

Text: Hebrews 3:1-6

To be in the house is not to just be someone who comes to a building regularly, but to be someone who is one of God's people, in the family of God, one who is born again. We need to ask ourselves: Are we in the house of the Lord?

1) Jesus is greater (than Moses and any other) because he is over the house (builder of the house (see vs. 4)) This is in contrast to Moses who was a servant in the house.

Moses was a faithful Therapon in the House! Looking at the greek word used for servant we see that  "servant" -the word is not doulos but therapon.  Whereas doulos describes one in bondage as a slave or servant; therapon carries the meaning of a voluntary servant who acts because of affection or devotion.  Therapon emphasizes an office which was honorable and dignified.

As Wayne Barber puts it - “Therapon denotes the willing service rendered as well as the relationship between the one serving and the one he serves.?

2) Are You in the House?

 a) If so then you will stay the course of Confidence - The word confidence is a speaking term.  In other words, one who is in the house will continue to speak with confidence about Christ, especially during times of persecution!

b) You will stay the course of boasting - the word boast means to rejoice over a privilege or possession.

“But he who boasts is to boast in the Lord.?  II Corinthians 10:17

Final thoughts - The Builder (Jesus Christ) is building a Mansion for the Redeemed in Glory!

Text: Hebrews 3:1-2 ; John 17:6-24

Jesus was the once and for all sacrifice for our sin and he is also our intercessor.  While some teach that Jesus needs help in his role as intercessor (examples include: Paula White and the Roman Catholic Church) we can see that this is false as we look at the scriptures.

What Does the Bible Say?
* The title “High Priest? highlights two aspects of the saving work of Jesus: His “once for all? sacrifice for sin, and His ongoing ministry of intercession for us!
* “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands…but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.? Hebrews 9:2
* “…Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.? Romans 8:34
* For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.? I Tim. 2:5

Jesus Ministry of Intercession:

Demonstrated in His High Priestly Prayer (see John Chapter 17)
 1. Safety of believers. (vs. 15)
 2. Sanctification of believers. (vs. 17,19)
 3. Spiritual Unity of believers. (vs. 21-23)
 4. Share in His glory. (vs. 24)

A Final Promise:
“He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.?   Hebrews 7:26

Text: Hebrews 3:1

Why would the author of Hebrews call Jesus an Apostle? If you look throughout the bible you will find that this is the only time that this term is used with regard to Christ.  Interestingly there is no other mention of any others using the term apostle in the book of Hebrews.  Why is this?  Because of authority.  Jesus authority exceeded that of even Moses (for whom the recipients of the letter held up even higher than Abraham).  Jesus is the one with all (supreme) authority. The word apostle means: "one sent forth" of God.  This emphasizes mission.

Looking at Three significant points of encouragement:

1) The Purpose - to encourage us to focus on the mission that he has given us today.  (see Luke 4:15-19)

2) The Completion - of his mission encourages us to finish the course. (see John 17:1-4)

3) The Focus - of the other apostles can encourage us to give him all the glory. (see Acts 3:11-16 and Acts 4:5-12) here we see that they stayed on message and while this is hard to do we need to do the same today.

Text: Hebrews 3:1

As we begin the new year some of us take time to think back on plans we made for last year and ask ourselves how those plans turned out? As we do the same this year let us do as the Apostle Paul exhorts us in Hebrews  3:1 to "consider Jesus". Consider here means to give complete attention and diligent observation. We should consider the salvation he has given us. It is all too easy to lose focus and let distractions take our lives off Christ.

Listen as Rob Caine (Youth Pastor here at SRCC) brings us a message about the real significance of Christmas.  In John 1:14 we learn that the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

1) He was God - (vs. 6)
2) He let go - (vs. 7)
3) He took on the role of a bondservant
4) He took on the form of a man

Our attitude today should be the same as that of Jesus by being a servant.

Ephesians 4:25-32

While each of us can relate to grief in life we have a harder time understanding grieving the Holy Spirit. (see also Psalm 78)

1) What is our motivation for not grieving the Holy Spirit? - Because we have been sealed with the Spirit.

2) How do we grieve the Holy Spirit? - by the conviction of sin.
Paul gets specific (beginning in vs. 29):
a) Let no unwholesome word come from your mouth.
b) Bitterness
c) Wrath
d) Anger
e) Clamor
f) Slander
g) Malice

Text: John 13:31-14:1,  John 14:16-17
As christians we need to understand the inside help we have through the Holy Spirit of God which dwells within us as believers in Christ.  The church has suppressed this gift of the Holy Spirit but we all need a better understanding of this gift. In John 13:31-14:1 Jesus tells the disciples that he would be with them for only a little while longer and this troubles Peter.  In John 14:16-17 Jesus tells them about a helper, the Holy Spirit, that he will send after he departs from them. Here we see three things about the Holy Spirit:

1) The Holy Spirit is neither inferior nor superior to Christ
2) The Holy Spirit intercedes for us (see also Romans 8:26)
3) The Holy Spirit indwells us (John 14:17)

In Romans 12:9-21 we see areas where we need help.

Text: Jude 20-23

Listen as Kent Fuller (Avant Ministries) from the country of Belize brings us a message from the book of Jude. We are under attack and we face opposition from our adversary Satan and in order to overcome this opposition we must reach up and reach out.

In these verses we see a summation of the Ten Commandments. First we are to reach up.  We do this by growing our relationship with God by reading and studying his word.

Second we are to reach out.  Not only are we to study and pray but we are to serve others (vs. 22).  We need to share with others about our relationship with Jesus . We also need to confront those who proclaim false teachings.

Text: Matthew 9:35-38

Do you see people as God does?  We all love to share good news in life but what is our role in telling the good news of the gospel?  We cannot be good at sharing the good news until we have a heart of compassion. Compassion is defined as a feeling of sorrow or pity for someone in trouble.  To effectively share with others we must first see them as Jesus did (Matt. 9:36)  Here we see that people are without a way and without a sheppard.  Looking at 2 Timothy 3:1-4 we can see what keeps us from having compassion. First selfishness  and second lovers of money (vs. 2). (Book referred to is Marks of a Healthy Church by Dr. John MacArthur) People today are more focused on their best life now but the truth is the best is yet to come!

We need to see the multitudes and that they are in trouble (Matt. 9:37) While the workers are few the answer can be found in prayer.  Prayer that the lord will send more workers by the power of his Holy Spirit working in the lives of the laborers. We see in vs. 7 (1 Thessalonians  1:2-10) that they were examples and were so effective that Paul didn't need to say anything.

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-18

So many times the busyness of life keeps us from saying "thank you"!  The next time we have a few moments to pause in the busyness of life: let's say thank you to God.  The following are prayers as recorded by Charles Spurgeon.  These prayers (from  Prayer-a-Phrases) would be a tremendous place to begin our journey of consistent prayer before the throne of grace.

*Grace
*Faith
*Hope
*Love
*Word
*Christ

There are many ministries at here at Springville Road Community Church and we like to take time every year to talk about some of these ministries.  This year rather than having several speakers come and talk about these ministries one of our Deacons, Brian Reed, created some short videos.  These videos are about our English as a Second Language (ESL) ministry, the Springville Road Bible Institute, and the AWANA program at SRCC (note: some of the AWANA video was shot on "crazy hair night" and the people shown want you to know that this is not their everyday hairstyles.)  (Click on the links to watch the videos.)

After the videos Teresa Blount, our Pastor Thad Blount's wife, came and shared her testimony and some insights into her walk with God as a pastor's wife, mom, and teacher. Listen to this podcast to hear Teresa and Pastor Thad.

Text: Hebrews 10

This is the second message of our 2007 Bible Conference.  Don Barrett continues the series on Running the Race with Purpose in this session by preaching on  how the race is won.

To win the race we must finish.  What is it that drives you? What are your passions and motivations in life? How do I know if I'm going to finish?

1st by careful examination.  (Hebrew 10:19) This will require me to jettison things that hold me back.

2nd I must have evaluation. (Hebrew 10:22-24) "Let us..." Let us what? Draw near, hold fast. Back in Hebrews chapter 2:1-3 we see some of the things to evaluate, "Lest we drift". Are we prone to wander? yes, so we need to be earnest.  We need to exhort one another daily by asking each other how we are doing spiritually. Have you become dull of hearing and unwilling or able to eat anything but milk (Hebrews 5:11- ).

3rd A prayerful Exhortation - (Hebrews 10:24-25) We must get our mind in the game. To get down and focused we must sometimes be zapped.  If you are disinterested in these things then you might not be in a position to finish the race.

Text Hebrews 12:1-2

The theme for our Bible Conference this year is "Running the Race with Purpose". and we were pleased to welcome Don Barrett as our guest speaker.  Don has served in the ministry for over 30 years and was pastor of Lake Charles (La.) Bible Church for almost 17 years before becoming Executive Director of Camp Pearl Ministries in 1996 until the present. Don and his wife Angie are the parents of 3 grown children.

In this first session of our conference Don speaks about how the race of faith is run. First the race must be run with focus. Heaven is not a prize or reward because all who believe in Jesus Christ and trust in him as savior and lord will go to heaven because it is a free gift given by grace.  Heaven is not the issue but rather what we will do when there.

When do we start the race? Upon the day of our salvation and even though the life of a Christian has many pitfalls and difficulties a judgment still awaits the Christian with regard to what he has done in this life. What is it that holds us back in the race?  We all have 168 hours in our week and we need to evaluate what we do with our time.  Is what you're doing with your time wise? The things that you spend your time on are weighing you down and burden you as you run the race.

Second, how do we run the race? By running it in Christ because he started our faith, continues our faith and he will complete our faith. Our goal should be to live for Christ so that one day he will say "Well done my good and faithful servant."

Third, the distinction. We are not running the race against one another but together.  Are you just getting by (See 2 Peter 1:3) or are you running the race with a purpose so that others will also want what you have?

Text:John 8:12-47

As we continue our study in the book of Hebrews we need to go back to the book of John to better understand the advantages of Christ's humanity.

Do you belong to Jesus and are you certain you belong?  If you are not in Christ you will die in your sins. (vs.38) Jesus tells them that they are following their father - Satan. They claimed that Abraham was their father but they did not do the deeds of Abraham. (vs. 39)

If we claim God as our father (vs. 42) then we will love Jesus by 1) Demonstrating our love for Jesus by sharing him with others. 2) By enjoying obeying his commands 3) By loving the thought of his appearing.

In vs. 44 we see how to identify those who are following Satan - He does not stand in the truth.

Text: I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Titus 2:11-14

Listen as Rob Caine brings us a message about the return of Christ.  The bible speaks of Christ return but do we really believe it could happen at any time and are we ready for his return today?

In  I Thessalonians 4:13-18 we see an event that is known as the rapture; here we see that Christ is coming back.  In I Corinthians 15:50-52 we see that we shall be changed. When will this take place? In James 5:7-9 we see that the "coming of the Lord is at hand".  Hebrews 10:23-25  says "as you see the day approaching". I Peter 4:7 states that "the end of all things is near". I John 2:18 refers to the "last hour". If these writers believed that the end was near then just how much closer are we today? God is not bound by time because to him a 1000 years is as a day and a day is like a 1000 years. God created time but he is not bound by it.

Next we must ask ourselves if we are ready?  Titus 2:11-14.  How can you be ready? 1st you must be saved (vs.11) The possibility for salvation exists for all men through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (vs. 12). 2nd you must deny sin a place in your life. We should not be looking for security and pleasure in this world but looking toward the blessed hope.

Text: Hebrews 2:10-13

If you need to know you are blessed then just read Hebrews chapter 2.  Listen as Pastor Thad continues our study in the book of Hebrews.

Christ Humanity allows us to share in his glory.
1) Who made sharing in this glory possible? - (vs. 10) The Father
2) When did this take place? - While we might be thinking the future it is actually the past.  The glory began when the father chose you in time past (Eph. 1:3-6).
3) Who shares in this glory? - (Gal. 3:23 - 4:7) We are no longer slaves but sons.  This was something meant for Christ that we as Christians get to share!
4) What is his purpose in bringing sons to glory? - It completes the picture. Christ led the way and he did this by suffering.  He cleared the path through the cross to glory (vs. 10-11)

Text: Hebrews 2:5-18

This week we return to our study of the book of Hebrews. Listen to Paster Thad as he shares with us about who will rule in the world to come.

Man lost his dominion at the fall (Garden of Eden).
1)What dominion had been given to man? (Gen. 1:26) - The Earth.  God allowed man to share in his glory and while this was lost Jesus got it back.
2) How was this dominion lost? - Sin (Heb. 2:8). Man has lost that rule no matter what you might hear or think today.
3) What about me? - In Revelation 19:11 - 20:6 we see Christ win the battle over Satan and then in Rev. 20:6 we see that we shall be priest of God and shall reign with him

Text: 2 Corinthians 8 & 9

Listen to Brom Cowser as he tell us about Faith Promise and how you to can change your attitude to one of anticipation in the area of giving for God's work.

Examples:
1) Christ
2) Rich and Poor
3) The Cheerful Giver

Faith Promise is not a pledge to the church but rather a promise between you and God.  Why do we do this? (2 Cor. 9:13) They glorified God by the confession of the gospel and the liberal sharing with all men. As God gives to you, you can have the privilege of passing it on to the Lord and his work.

Brom and Betty Cowser's over 50 years of missions experience have equipped them in counseling other missionaries while in the field and during their furloughs. Brom also speaks at camps, mission conferences and colleges. However, their greatest joy is their radio ministry. Brother Cowser prepares and broadcasts messages via radio each week for several island ministries in Papiamentu and English. Currently the program is broadcast by eleven different radio stations. They appreciate your prayers that each broadcast will be a blessing to all the listeners and that listeners will be saved. They also ask for prayer that the radio equipment will remain in good working order and for safety in their travels and good health.

1 Corinthians 11:26

The Lord's Supper reminds us that the pivotal event in word history is the cross.

1) Who? - Eph. 1:7-8 In him (Christ) we have redemption through his blood. Redemption is to be bought off the slave block of sin. The forgiveness of our trespasses could not have been satisfied any other way. Hebrews 9:12-14
2) Why? - Why do we have the Lord's Supper? Because (1 Corinthians 11:26) you proclaim the death of Christ and what it accomplished.
3) What? - What would keep me from celebrating? For the believer it is sin in my life. 1 Cor. 11:27 - "unworthy manor". Sin easily entangles us and sin is more than just actions but is also our thoughts.

Text: Hebrews 2:1-4

As we begin chapter 2 we see the first of five warnings given in the book of Hebrews.  The content of Hebrews reveals the need for warnings and this first warning arises directly from the preceding chapter.

The Author’s Wisdom:
* Pay attention- The word translated “pay attention? means to hold to.  Hebrews 2:1 literally reads, “It is exceedingly necessary that we give heed to what we have heard.?
* This command is not isolated in the book of Hebrews. (3:1; 12:1-2)
* The wisdom of the author is repeated and rightly so considering the condition of the readers. (5:11-6:12; 10:19-25)

The Author’s Warning:
* The failure to hold on to would result in drifting.
* The word for “drift? in the original language means to float by.
* Meaning if we do not determine to pay close attention we will drift away.
* Failing to hold on to the word (the gospel) is described in verse 3 as “neglecting a great salvation.?
* If we are careless listeners or if we neglect the Word the Bible says we will be disciplined by the Father.(12)
* An example of potentially drifting is given by the apostle Paul in the book of Galatians.

Text: Hebrews 1:4-14

Is Jesus most prominent in your life today?  In this section the author of Hebrews makes the case for Christ and his preeminence and while angles are important they are subordinate to Christ.

1) Jesus has the greater title.
2) Jesus has the greater position - he is to be worshiped angels are not.
3) Jesus is sovereign - He will demonstrate his authority at his second coming.

He will be enthroned. God has anointed him and he is the eternal creator who never changes.

Text: Hebrews 1:1-3

As we continue our study in the book of Hebrews the question that leaps from the first three verses must be considered and certainly was in the minds of the believing Jews. The question is:  What argument exist that proves Jesus is greater than the prophets of old?

1. His relationship to the Father
2. His Resume'

a) He has inherited all things.
b) He created all things.
c) He is God.
d) He sustains.
e) He was the perfect sacrifice.
f) He has a position of authority and exaltation.

Text: Exodus 7:13-17; Phil. 1:6; Psalm 73:12-20

Listen as Dean Self brings us a message about the will of the Lord.

God will 1) Cause things to happen  or 2) Allow things to happen. While man has responsibility ( see the example of Adam and Eve in the garden) we should never think that our choices will change or determine God's will (Phil. 1:6)

Examples:
1) Jonah - when we are out of God's will we have to "pick up the tab".
2) Joseph - While his brothers meant it for evil God meant it for good.
3) Pharaoh - He did not trust in the Lord and look at what happened!

If you harden your heart God will "super-size" it, but if you trust in the Lord then he will "tenderize" it.

Text: Hebrews

The theme of the book o f Jesus is "Jesus is far better!".
While the author of the book is unknown it is inspired by God.
The recipients of the letter were Christians especially Jewish Christians.
Why was the book written?
1. To emphasize that Jesus provides a superior basis for relating to God. (Hebrews 10:19-22)
2. To emphasize the importance of encouraging one another. (Hebrews 5:11)
3. To challenge the readers cocerning the importance of maturing in the Christian life. (Hebrews 5:11-6:20)
4. To challenge the readers to draw near to God as the basis of endurance. (Hebrews 4:14-16)
5. To encourage the readers who at some point in the past faced significant persecution. (Hebrews 10:32-34; 12:4; 13:13-14)
6. To challenge the readers to assemble together on a regular basis. (Hebrews 10:25)
7. To encourage the readers to run the race looking especially to Jesus as the greatest example (Hebrews 11 thru 12:1-2)

Text: Genesis 1-3

The book of Hebrews begins with God and in Genesis we see God from the beginning of the bible.  So before we jump into Hebrews let's look back first in Genesis.

We see God as:
1. Creator
2. Provider
3. Forgiveness

As we study Hebrews we need to look at the reality of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This is the second message of a series looking at the Emerging Church Movement:

I. Definition - is a controversial 21st century Christian movement whose participants seek to engage postmodern people, especially those not already in the church. Their target age appears to be 18-35 year olds. Proponents call the movement an emerging "conversation" to emphasize its developing and decentralized nature. They tend to radically contextualize their methods and __message__ to impact a postmodern culture.

II. Values and Characteristics

A. They have a __Flexable__ approach to and continual reexamination of theology.
B. They rely on open dialogue rather than__dogmatic__proclamation of Scripture.
C. They have a __non-authoritative__ stance on the gospel of Jesus Christ.  don't believe making disciples must equal making adherents to the Christian religion.

"I do hope all who feel so called will become Buddhist followers of Jesus. I don't hope all Jews or Hindus will become members of the Christian religion." - Brian McLaren

D. They depend more on methodology than __Theology__.
E. They do not emphasize the importance of __leadership__within the church.
F. They suggest that Scripture is not clear enough to allow for clarity.

III. A Biblical Response for the Church

A. __Heed__the Warnings from Scripture (James 5:19-20; II John) we should "test all things" and we should "examine and cling".

The Emerging Church is a movement that believes in dialog over doctrine.  In examining the scriptures is this approach wise or proper? The Emerging Church Movement is more concerned about experiencing God and not just sitting in a pew watching.  They have a nonauthoritative stance of the Gospel and a non-emphasis of Church leadership.  The Emerging Church Movement also believes in experience over reason.  Each of us will answer to the Lord. Text: Philippians 3:12-16

The world today preaches a message of happiness and whatever it takes to make you happy.  As Christians we are commanded to have a life of joy.  This joy is not based on how we feel about our spouse, our children, our job or our finances but is found in the Lord Jesus Christ and the power of his resurrection.

Today Elder Steve Bartlett explains to the church about the recent retreat that the Elders took.  At the retreat the Elders looked at the direction of the church and its various ministries and began to examine the possibility that the Lord may be leading the church to move it's meetings to a new location.

Text: Acts 14:19-22

Pastor Thad Blount speaks on how we have the privilege to grow in our relationship with Christ every day (Colossians 2:6-7).  To see how you measure up in your growth look at the following areas:

  • Is there time alone with God seeking his wisdom? (Mark 1:35)
  • Are you intentionally building relationships within the body of Christ? (1 Thessalonians 2:8)
  • Do you love those within the Body of Christ? (Philemon 4-7)
  • Are you growing in your knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ? (2 Peter 3:17-18)
  • Do you enjoy assembling with Believers? (Hebrews 10:23-25)
  • Is your love for and dependence upon God's word evident to others? (1 Peter 1:11-23)

Text: Luke 5:1-11

Listen to Pastor Thad Blount as we evaluate whether we are a disciple or a volunteer. This sermon looks at outreach worldwide, locally and on a personal level. Personal outreach is very important as we see from the example of Peter in Luke chapter 5. We see that the Lord Jesus wants disciples and not volunteers. A disciple is there no matter the cost and we must be submissive to the Lord.

The Lord's Supper Service
I Corinthians 11:23-34

Introduction:  Today we participate in a form of worship that is an old as Christianity itself.  In fact, the Lord's Supper was inaugurated by Jesus Himself on the eve of His crucifixion.  Today I want to share with you two things.

 I. The four basic views as to what the Lord's Supper
    represents.

1st - Transubstantiation: this view is held by the Roman Catholic Church.  They hold the view that the bread and wine literally change into the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.  In other words the recipient actually eats the Lord's body and drinks His blood, because Jesus is literally being sacrificed in the mass.

2nd - Consubstantiation: this view is held by the Lutherans.   They hold the view that the bread and wine actually contain the body and blood of Jesus, but do not literally change.  They say Christ is actually present with, in and under the elements. According to them, the recipient receives the forgiveness of sins and the confirmation of their faith through the elements.

3rd - Reformed: this view is held by the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches.  They teach that Christ is not literally present in the elements, but there is the spiritual presence of Christ.  They teach that the recipient receives grace through partaking of the elements.

4th - Memorial:  This view teaches that Jesus is present neither physically or spiritually in the elements, but that the Lord's Supper serves as a symbolic reminder of what Jesus did for man at the cross; signifying to others their belief in Christ as Savior as well as His imminent return.

II. The Reasons Christians Share the Lord's Supper.

1st - Christians share the Lord's Supper to remember the agony of His death.

2nd - Christians share the Lord's Supper to proclaim  to others the Lord's death.

3rd - Christians share the Lord's Supper with a certain hope.

Text: Philippians 3:1-6

Listen to Pastor Thad Blount as he brings us a message from God's Word.

Key   definitions:

*   rejoice - means to be glad or delighted, to celebrate, to be  cheerful.

*   beware - The word beware is used three times in this verse.  The word means to perceive with your eyes, to pay close attention. Kenneth Wuest makes the following observation: - In this context the words dogs, evil workers, and false circumcision are attributed to Jews who professed to believe in Christ but depended upon keeping the ritual of Judaism for their salvation.  Such men insisted that unless one kept the Law of Moses, he would not be saved.  Paul regards this teaching as dangerous and subversive to the gospel of Christ.

*   evil workers  - describes those who were charaterized by godlessness with the implication of being harmful or damaging.

*   worship - describes one who is living in obedience to God resulting in a life of praise.

*   glory - means to boast over a privilege or possession. The idea is that our boasting be in Jesus Christ.

REMEMBER

Your responsibility with God's enabling, is to consistently apply truths you have heard from the word (I Tim. 4: 7-9; James 1: 22-27). As you consider the message, ask yourself what God wants you to change in your life this week.
