This is the fifth lesson in a study of the book of Romans.  This week we continue Romans Chapter 2 and into Chapter 3.

1 Corinthians 11:26

The Lord's Supper reminds us that the pivotal event in word history is the cross.

1) Who? - Eph. 1:7-8 In him (Christ) we have redemption through his blood. Redemption is to be bought off the slave block of sin. The forgiveness of our trespasses could not have been satisfied any other way. Hebrews 9:12-14
2) Why? - Why do we have the Lord's Supper? Because (1 Corinthians 11:26) you proclaim the death of Christ and what it accomplished.
3) What? - What would keep me from celebrating? For the believer it is sin in my life. 1 Cor. 11:27 - "unworthy manor". Sin easily entangles us and sin is more than just actions but is also our thoughts.

This is  lesson #2 in a study of canonicity, a study about where we get our Bible.  Your instructor is Elder David Nichols.

How We Got Our Bible - Internal Evidence of Inspiration:

1. II Tim.3:16 all scripture is given by inspiration of God.
2.Christ accepted the persons and the events mentioned in the Old Testament as historical fact.
3. Christ used scripture as conclusive evidence in answering His critics.
4. Christ used the authority of scripture to refute the temptation by satan in the wilderness. (Matt.4:4, 7, 10)
5. The writers all claimed  to be inspired by God.
6. Daniel read Jeremiah’s prophecy that the Babylonian captivity would last 70  years.
7. Peter accepted the writings of Paul as being inspired.
8. John said that the writings of the Apostles, along with his own writings were inspired by God and authoritative. (I Jn. 4:6)

External Evidences of Inspiration:
1. The unity of the Bible.
2. The transforming ability of the Bible.
3. Fulfilled prophecy.
4. Biblical accuracy about history.
5. The indestructibility of the Bible.
6. Inspiration gives the Bible its authority.

Text: Hebrews 2:1-4

As we begin chapter 2 we see the first of five warnings given in the book of Hebrews.  The content of Hebrews reveals the need for warnings and this first warning arises directly from the preceding chapter.

The Author’s Wisdom:
* Pay attention- The word translated “pay attentionâ€? means to hold to.  Hebrews 2:1 literally reads, “It is exceedingly necessary that we give heed to what we have heard.â€?
* This command is not isolated in the book of Hebrews. (3:1; 12:1-2)
* The wisdom of the author is repeated and rightly so considering the condition of the readers. (5:11-6:12; 10:19-25)

The Author’s Warning:
* The failure to hold on to would result in drifting.
* The word for “driftâ€? in the original language means to float by. 
* Meaning if we do not determine to pay close attention we will drift away. 
* Failing to hold on to the word (the gospel) is described in verse 3 as “neglecting a great salvation.�
* If we are careless listeners or if we neglect the Word the Bible says we will be disciplined by the Father.(12)
* An example of potentially drifting is given by the apostle Paul in the book of Galatians.

This is the first lesson in a study of canonicity a study of from where we get our Bible.  Knowing that the Bible is the Word of God is important and as Christians we need to know how the Bible came  together, how it was written and if it is complete. Your instructor is Elder David Nichols.

How We Got Our Bible:
1. We define Canonicity as a rule of faith.
2. The word Bible comes from the Greek word Biblos.
3. A Testament is a covenant, agreement, promise.
4. The fourfold Old Testament is based on a topical arrangement of books stemming from the translation of the Hebrew scriptures into Greek.
5. Our Bible is not chronological.
6. The Septuagint was translated by 70 Hebrew scholars in Alexandria, Egypt around 250 B.C.
7. Christ is the central theme of the Bible.
8. Chapters were added in 1227 A.D.
9. Verses were added in 1551 A.D.
10. Chapter divisions and verses are not inspired by God, only the scriptures are.
11. Inspiration literally means God breathed.
12. Inspiration  may be defined as “God controls the written using the writer’s vocabulary to deliver a message free from error.
13. The orthodox view teaches the Bible is the Word of God.
14. The modernistic view teaches the Bible contains the word of God.
15. The Neo (new) orthodoxy view teaches the Bible becomes the Word of God.
16. We believe that inspiration is always:
      A.  Verbal which means literal   
      B.  Plenary which means full         and
      C.  Inerrant – without any errors

Text: Hebrews 1:4-14

Is Jesus most prominent in your life today?  In this section the author of Hebrews makes the case for Christ and his preeminence and while angles are important they are subordinate to Christ.

1) Jesus has the greater title.
2) Jesus has the greater position - he is to be worshiped angels are not.
3) Jesus is sovereign - He will demonstrate his authority at his second coming.

He will be enthroned. God has anointed him and he is the eternal creator who never changes.

Text: Hebrews 1:1-3

As we continue our study in the book of Hebrews the question that leaps from the first three verses must be considered and certainly was in the minds of the believing Jews. The question is:  What argument exist that proves Jesus is greater than the prophets of old?

1. His relationship to the Father
2. His Resume'

a) He has inherited all things.
b) He created all things.
c) He is God.
d) He sustains.
e) He was the perfect sacrifice.
f) He has a position of authority and exaltation.
