Text: Hebrews 4:12-13

Last week we learned that we should diligently pursue rest by faith. The question we ask this week is why? The answer is found in Hebrews 4:12-13.

Outline:
1) The word of God is Living (vs. 12)

*Living and active. The word is present tense indicating relevance for today. Today people don't want to hear the word because it is controversial.

2) The word of God is Active

* the Greek word is where we get the English word for energy. It works!

3) The word of God Penetrates.

* It never fails to cut.

4) The word of God Judges.

* It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. To think is to ponder or to think out. The English word for reflection comes from this. Think about sitting out under the stars while considering the universe. Intentions have more to do with thinking that leads to actions. Exposing the intentions of the heart.

5) The word of God Sees. (vs.13)

* The example of the garden of Eden and Jonah. Is it truly possible to hide from God? No! All things are open and laid bare. The example of an animal about to be sacrificed. There is nothing hidden from God and I must rest in that fact.

** See also Psalm 139: 1-16. How much does he know us? The word of God is powerful, it sees the depths.

Rest

Text: Hebrews 4:1-11

Listen as Pastor Thad brings a message from the book of Hebrews on the subject of "rest". Are you resting on God or are you resting on yourself?

Outline:
I. Rest Established

3a-Rest for those who believe
3b-No Rest because of unbelief
4-Rest established by God
âBy the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all the work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.â
5-No Rest-Author reiterates Israelâs unbelief
6a-Rest remains for some
6b-No Rest for those disobedient
7a-Rest offered-Whatâs the significance of this offer as mentioned in verse 7?

1. The time David wrote Psalm 95 was 3-400 years after Israel entered the land.
2. Even after their disobedience and entrance into the land via Joshua; Rest is still being offered.
3. Rest God offered is more than a piece of land as evident from Psalm 95.
4. The offer to Rest is still appropriate at the time of this letter and as the text indicates in verses 1 and 6 still available now.

II. Rest Available

* Rest is presently available. Entering in verse one is present tense; indicating that the rest available is neither past or future but a present opportunity for those believing. (verse 1)
* Rest is possible as one hears the good news (the gospel) and has faith. (verse 2)
* Rest does not mean absence of activity; but as the author establishes in verse 9; Rest means enjoyment of relationship.

III. Rest Brings Strong Exhortation

* Let us fear. Homer Kent writes, âthe fear spoken of is not terror but Godly fear which produces soberness and solemn recognition of Godâs awesomeness.â
* Let us be diligent. (labor) John MacArthur writes, âthe passage is not teaching that you can work to salvation or toward rest, but that you diligently enter in by faith alone.â

IV. Practical Thoughts on Rest

* Rest means no more trying to please God by fleshly works. We are free from legalism; we rest in grace.
* Rest means to be free from the worry of losing salvation and free from the worryâs of every day life.
* Rest is to have absolute confidence that God does not change.
* Rest means that we trust in Him.

We need to ask ourselves: Are we in the house of the Lord?

1) Jesus is greater (than Moses and any other) because he is over the house (builder of the house (see vs. 4)) This is in contrast to Moses who was a servant in the house.

Moses was a faithful Therapon in the House! Looking at the greek word used for servant we see that "servant" -the word is not doulos but therapon. Whereas doulos describes one in bondage as a slave or servant; therapon carries the meaning of a voluntary servant who acts because of affection or devotion. Therapon emphasizes an office which was honorable and dignified.

As Wayne Barber puts it - âTherapon denotes the willing service rendered as well as the relationship between the one serving and the one he serves.â

2) Are You in the House?

a) If so then you will stay the course of Confidence - The word confidence is a speaking term. In other words, one who is in the house will continue to speak with confidence about Christ, especially during times of persecution!

b) You will stay the course of boasting - the word boast means to rejoice over a privilege or possession.

âBut he who boasts is to boast in the Lord.â II Corinthians 10:17

Final thoughts - The Builder (Jesus Christ) is building a Mansion for the Redeemed in Glory!

Jesus Christ - The Apostle

Text: Hebrews 3:1

Why would the author of Hebrews call Jesus an Apostle? If you look throughout the bible you will find that this is the only time that this term is used with regard to Christ. Interestingly there is no other mention of any others using the term apostle in the book of Hebrews. Why is this? Because of authority. Jesus authority exceeded that of even Moses (for whom the recipients of the letter held up even higher than Abraham). Jesus is the one with all (supreme) authority. The word apostle means: "one sent forth" of God. This emphasizes mission.

Looking at Three significant points of encouragement:

1) The Purpose - to encourage us to focus on the mission that he has given us today. (see Luke 4:15-19)

2) The Completion - of his mission encourages us to finish the course. (see John 17:1-4)

3) The Focus - of the other apostles can encourage us to give him all the glory. (see Acts 3:11-16 and Acts 4:5-12) here we see that they stayed on message and while this is hard to do we need to do the same today.

Text: Hebrews 3:1

As we begin the new year some of us take time to think back on plans we made for last year and ask ourselves how those plans turned out? As we do the same this year let us do as the Apostle Paul exhorts us in Hebrews 3:1 to "consider Jesus". Consider here means to give complete attention and diligent observation. We should consider the salvation he has given us. In John 13:31-14:1 Jesus tells the disciples that he would be with them for only a little while longer and this troubles Peter. In John 14:16-17 Jesus tells them about a helper, the Holy Spirit, that he will send after he departs from them. Here we see three things about the Holy Spirit:

1) The Holy Spirit is neither inferior nor superior to Christ
2) The Holy Spirit intercedes for us (see also Romans 8:26)
3) The Holy Spirit indwells us (John 14:17)

In Romans 12:9-21 we see areas where we need help.

Beginning as far back as 1725, Richard Bentley and Johann Bengal challenged other scholars to gather available textual materials.
17. 1870-1875 â The first Bible using the âCritical Textâ was published known as the âEnglish Revised Versionâ
18. There are really very few variations. The Bible is a very big book with thousands of words.
19. When the eye picked up the same letter or word twice, it was called âDittographyâ
20. We are under attack and we face opposition from our adversary Satan and in order to overcome this opposition we must reach up and reach out.

In these verses we see a summation of the Ten Commandments. First we are to reach up. We do this by growing our relationship with God by reading and studying his word.

Second we are to reach out. Not only are we to study and pray but we are to serve others (vs. 22). We need to share with others about our relationship with Jesus . We also need to confront those who proclaim false teachings.

A Heart of Compassion

Text: Matthew 9:35-38

Do you see people as God does? We all love to share good news in life but what is our role in telling the good news of the gospel? We cannot be good at sharing the good news until we have a heart of compassion. Compassion is defined as a feeling of sorrow or pity for someone in trouble. To effectively share with others we must first see them as Jesus did (Matt. 9:36) Here we see that people are without a way and without a sheppard. Looking at 2 Timothy 3:1-4 we can see what keeps us from having compassion. First selfishness and second lovers of money (vs. 2). (Book referred to is Marks of a Healthy Church by Dr. John MacArthur) People today are more focused on their best life now but the truth is the best is yet to come!

We need to see the multitudes and that they are in trouble (Matt. 9:37) While the workers are few the answer can be found in prayer. Prayer that the lord will send more workers by the power of his Holy Spirit working in the lives of the laborers. We see in vs. 7 (1 Thessalonians 1:2-10) that they were examples and were so effective that Paul didn't need to say anything.

Bible Conference 2007: "How the Race is Won"

Text: Hebrews 10

This is the second message of our 2007 Bible Conference. Don Barrett continues the series on Running the Race with Purpose in this session by preaching on how the race is won.

To win the race we must finish. What is it that drives you? What are your passions and motivations in life? How do I know if I'm going to finish?

1st by careful examination. (Hebrew 10:19) This will require me to jettison things that hold me back.

2nd I must have evaluation. (Hebrew 10:22-24) "Let us..." Let us what? Draw near, hold fast. Back in Hebrews chapter 2:1-3 we see some of the things to evaluate, "Lest we drift". Are we prone to wander? yes, so we need to be earnest. We need to exhort one another daily by asking each other how we are doing spiritually. Have you become dull of hearing and unwilling or able to eat anything but milk (Hebrews 5:11- ).

3rd A prayerful Exhortation - (Hebrews 10:24-25) We must get our mind in the game. To get down and focused we must sometimes be zapped. If you are disinterested in these things then you might not be in a position to finish the race.

Bible Conference 2007: "How the Race is Run"

Text Hebrews 12:1-2

The theme for our Bible Conference this year is "Running the Race with Purpose". and we were pleased to welcome Don Barrett as our guest speaker. Don has served in the ministry for over 30 years and was pastor of Lake Charles (La.) Bible Church for almost 17 years before becoming Executive Director of Camp Pearl Ministries in 1996 until the present. Don and his wife Angie are the parents of 3 grown children.

In this first session of our conference Don speaks about how the race of faith is run. First the race must be run with focus. Heaven is not a prize or reward because all who believe in Jesus Christ and trust in him as savior and lord will go to heaven because it is a free gift given by grace. Heaven is not the issue but rather what we will do when there.

When do we start the race? Upon the day of our salvation and even though the life of a Christian has many pitfalls and difficulties a judgment still awaits the Christian with regard to what he has done in this life. What is it that holds us back in the race? We all have 168 hours in our week and we need to evaluate what we do with our time. Is what you're doing with your time wise? The things that you spend your time on are weighing you down and burden you as you run the race.

Second, how do we run the race? By running it in Christ because he started our faith, continues our faith and he will complete our faith. Our goal should be to live for Christ so that one day he will say "Well done my good and faithful servant."

Third, the distinction. We are not running the race against one another but together. Are you just getting by (See 2 Peter 1:3) or are you running the race with a purpose so that others will also want what you have?

(vs.38) Jesus tells them that they are following their father - Satan. They claimed that Abraham was their father but they did not do the deeds of Abraham. (vs. 39)

If we claim God as our father (vs. 42) then we will love Jesus by 1) Demonstrating our love for Jesus by sharing him with others. 2) By enjoying obeying his commands 3) By loving the thought of his appearing.

In vs. 44 we see how to identify those who are following Satan - He does not stand in the truth.

The Imminent Return of Christ

Text: I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Titus 2:11-14

Listen as Rob Caine brings us a message about the return of Christ. The bible speaks of Christ return but do we really believe it could happen at any time and are we ready for his return today?

In I Thessalonians 4:13-18 we see an event that is known as the rapture; here we see that Christ is coming back. In I Corinthians 15:50-52 we see that we shall be changed. When will this take place? In James 5:7-9 we see that the "coming of the Lord is at hand". Hebrews 10:23-25 says "as you see the day approaching". I Peter 4:7 states that "the end of all things is near". I John 2:18 refers to the "last hour". If these writers believed that the end was near then just how much closer are we today? God is not bound by time because to him a 1000 years is as a day and a day is like a 1000 years. God created time but he is not bound by it.

Next we must ask ourselves if we are ready? Titus 2:11-14. How can you be ready? 1st you must be saved (vs.11) The possibility for salvation exists for all men through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (vs. 12). 2nd you must deny sin a place in your life. We should not be looking for security and pleasure in this world but looking toward the blessed hope.

This
is lesson #5 in a study of canonicity, a study about where we
get our Bible. Your
instructor is Elder David Nichols.

1.The 5 basic criteria of Canonicity
    1) Is it authoritative â does it claim to be of God?
    2) Is it prophetic â was it written by a servant of God?
    3) Is it authentic â does it tell the truth about God, man, etc.?
    4) Is the book dynamic â does it possess the life- transforming power of God?
    5) Is the book received or accepted by the people of God?
2. The development of the Old Testament canon was during the period of 1500 B.C. to 100 A.D.
3. The development of the New Testament canon was during the period of 55 A.D. to 200 A.D.
4. Apocrypha = hidden, misunderstood
5. Purposes in putting together a New Testament canon
    a. The Ecclesiastical reason
    b. The Theological reason
    c. The Political reason
6. Emperor Constantine became a Christian and ordered Eusebius to prepare 50 Bibles to be distributed
7. The New Testament was written during the last half of the first century.
8. During the 4th century â 27 books are secured as canonical and have never been questioned since.
9. Books rejected by all âPseudepigraphaâ â By the 9th century, it has been estimated that perhaps there were as many as 280 of these books.
10. These books were completely rejected by all the church fathers because none of them met any of the standards of canonicity and many of them teach heresy and religious fantasy.
11. Books disputed by some â âAntilegomenaâ
    a. Hebrews
    b. James
    c. II Peter
    d. II and III John
    e. Jude
    f. Revelation
12. Of the twenty seven books that make up our New Testament, all have passed the test of canonicity and have a permanent place in our Bible.

Springville Road Bible Institute -

This
is lesson #4 in a study of canonicity, a study about where we
get our Bible. Your
instructor is Elder David Nichols.

1. The development of the Old Testament Canon involved a period of development from 1500 B.C. to 100 A.D.
A) Progressive collection of prophetic books B) Prophetic continuity through the books C) Books accepted by all â Homologoumena D) Books rejected by all â Pseudepigrapha E) Books disputed by some â Antilegomena F) Books accepted by some â Apocrypha
2. From the very beginning, the inspired writings were collected by the people of God and they were revered as being very special and sacred.
3. The books of Moses were cited throughout the Old Testament
4. A psalm of David â Ps. 18 â is recorded word for word in II Sam.22
5. Daniel cites Jeremiah 25 in Daniel 9:2.
6. The prophet Jonah recites parts from many psalms (Jonah 2)
7. Clearly there is seen a progressive collection interlocking the Old Testament together so that we can see a growing collection of divinely
8. There was also a prophetic continuity through the books: * One Theme â Jehovah â Jesus Christ * One problem â sin â separation from God * One solution â salvation by a substitutionary atonement by a Savior
9. Joshua wrote the last chapter of Genesis
10. Judges continues after the death of Joshua, the son of Nun.
11. Samuel established a school of prophets I Sam. 19:20
12. Homologoumena â to speak as one
13. Pseudepigrapha â false writings
14. Antilegomena- to speak against
15. Apocrypha â hidden or doubtful
16. Homologoumena â received by all * 34 of the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament were never disputed
17. Pseudepigrapha â rejected by all * Most of these books arose from within the context of religious fantasy *Curiosity about the death of Moses led to the writing of the non-canonical book, "Assumption of Moses * These books reflect a literary style of a period around 200 B.C. To 200 A.D
18. Antilegomena â disputed by some

Five - Rejected because:
The Songs of Solomon Too sensual
Ecclesiastes Too skeptical
Esther No mention of God by name
Ezekiel Too anti-Mosaic
Proverbs Too conflicting
Apocrypha â accepted by some
Def. Something understood only by the initiated and not an outsider There are fifteen books Usually placed between Malachi and Matthew.

Brother Cowser prepares and broadcasts messages via radio each week for
several island ministries in Papiamentu and English. Currently the
program is broadcast by eleven different radio stations. They
appreciate your prayers that each broadcast will be a blessing to all

Bible Institute: Canonicity - Class #3

Springville Road Bible Institute -

This
is lesson #3 in a study of canonicity, a study about where we
get our Bible. Your
instructor is Elder David Nichols.

1. The first link in the chain of God delivering His Word to us is inspiration.
2. The second link in the chain is canonicity.
3. Canon = Greek Kanon is defined as a measuring rod.
4. Inspiration deals with authority.
5. Canonicity deals with acceptance.
6. The Canon of the Old Testament differs from the development of the New Testament as seen below.
Old Testament - Jewish community, Collected over several thousand years

New Testament - Universal body of believers, Letters were sent to large geographical area, Collected over approx. 100 â 200 years

7. In 303 B.C. Diocletian ordered the destruction of the Bible.
8. The existence of a canon or collection of authoritive writings began 3000 to 4000 years ago.
9. Some of the wrong views on what determines canonicity are:
A. Age determines canonicity B. The Hebrew language determines canonicity C. The Torah determines canonicity D. Religious value can determine canonicity
10. Some right views of what determines canonicity â A. Inspiration determines canonicity
11. Five basic criteria of canonicity: A. Is the letter authoritive B. Is it prophetic C. Is it authentic D. Is it dynamic E. Is the book received or accepted by the people of God.
12. The Apocrypha are 15 non-canonical books written between 400 B.C. and 100 B.C. Greek Apokryphos def. As âhiddenâ
13. Remember false teaching never liberates!
14. God spoke to the prophets, then He worked in the hearts of the people so they would accept it.

The Lord's Supper - Who Participates and Why

1 Corinthians 11:26

The Lord's Supper reminds us that the pivotal event in word history is the cross.

1) Who? - Eph. 1:7-8 In him (Christ) we have redemption through his blood. Redemption is to be bought off the slave block of sin. The forgiveness of our trespasses could not have been satisfied any other way. Hebrews 9:12-14
2) Why? - Why do we have the Lord's Supper? Because (1 Corinthians 11:26) you proclaim the death of Christ and what it accomplished.
3) What? - What would keep me from celebrating? For the believer it is sin in my life. 1 Cor. 11:27 - "unworthy manor". Sin easily entangles us and sin is more than just actions but is also our thoughts.

II Tim.3:16 all scripture is given by inspiration of God.
2.Christ accepted the persons and the events mentioned in the Old Testament as historical fact.
3. Christ used scripture as conclusive evidence in answering His critics.
4. Christ used the authority of scripture to refute the temptation by satan in the wilderness. (Matt.4:4, 7, 10)
5. The writers all claimed to be inspired by God.
6. Daniel read Jeremiahâs prophecy that the Babylonian captivity would last 70 years.
7.

Text: Hebrews 2:1-4

As we begin chapter 2 we see the first of five warnings given in the book of Hebrews. The content of Hebrews reveals the need for warnings and this first warning arises directly from the preceding chapter.

The Authorâs Wisdom:
* Pay attention- The word translated âpay attentionâ means to hold to. Hebrews 2:1 literally reads, âIt is exceedingly necessary that we give heed to what we have heard.â
* This command is not isolated in the book of Hebrews. (3:1; 12:1-2)
* The wisdom of the author is repeated and rightly so considering the condition of the readers. (5:11-6:12; 10:19-25)

The Authorâs Warning:
* The failure to hold on to would result in drifting.
* The word for âdriftâ in the original language means to float by.
* Meaning if we do not determine to pay close attention we will drift away.
* Failing to hold on to the word (the gospel) is described in verse 3 as âneglecting a great salvation.â
* If we are careless listeners or if we neglect the Word the Bible says we will be disciplined by the Father.(12)
* An example of potentially drifting is given by the apostle Paul in the book of Galatians.
