Text: Hebrews 6:4-8

As we come to this part of the book of Hebrews we need to put on our "spiritual hard hats".  Many theologians skip over this part of Hebrews because of it's difficulty . In looking at this section we need to remember the context in which the writer was speaking and it is within the context of talking to Christian Believers.

1) Some hold to the idea that the people described in these verses are Christians who actually lose their salvation.
* If God saved you then you can't lose your salvation because it depends on God.  If you saved yourself then you can lose it because it depends on you.

2) Dangers of a Man Centered Theology.
a) Leads to frustration and fear.
b) Can and does produce a legalistic faith.
c) Hinders spiritual growth.
d) Elliminates the joy of serving the Lord.
e) Takes the "good news" out of the gospel

3) A look at John 10: 1-30
a) He calls his own sheep by name.
b) He gives eternal life (vs. 28).
c) No one can take them away (vs. 29) .

Text: Hebrews 5:11 - 6:3

It's time to embrace Christianity it's time to grow up.  This is what the author of Hebrews is talking about in this section of scripture.

1. The Author's Desire (5:11) - The author has gone from teaching to preaching. (Preaching is when one is challenged to act of the knowledge that one knows.)
2. The Author's Diagnosis - (5:12-14) they were immature, slow, sluggish. (see also 1 Cor. 3:1-4) They were still on a milk diet.  The question is why were they not eating any meat? By this time they should have been teachers and having an impact on the lives of others.

* Is maturity being reflected in our lives today? Why is the church of toady in trouble?  Because it is not acting on the knowledge that it has.

3. A Lack of Discernment - (vs. 14) They lacked the practice and experience to gain proper discernment.  (see also 2 Timothy 2:20-23) There are many out there who are false.

*How do you know if you are stagnant?
- Do you have a desire for the word of God?
- Do you long to obey the commands of God?

Text: Hebrews 4:14 - 5:3

In the early days of the church there were many Jewish Christians who had been taught (while Jews) that they needed a high priest.  As they transitioned from religion to relationship they had to be taught about the fact that Jesus is the perfect High Priest.

Jesus is the perfect high priest because:
* He is one who is not a sinner and one who never dies and as such will never need to be replaced.
*In Matthew 4:1 we see that Jesus was sinless even though he was tempted.
* In Hebrews 7 we see that Jesus is holy. We also see that he is without stain (Hebrews 7:27). This shows his permanent state of holiness.
* He is exalted above the heavens - He is higher than the heavens.

Even though Christ has this standing as the perfect high priest we need to never forget that he is there for us as Christians. We need to remember that there is 1) Help available - the best help we can give someone is the sharing of the word (Bible). 2) We need to point people to the savior.

Text: Hebrews 4:14-5:4

This week we return to our study in the book of Hebrews. So far we have seen that Jesus is far better than all ways.  In this section we are going to see that he is better than the Old Testament Priests.

1: One: There is one mediator between God and man - Jesus Christ.
*He can be the only intercessor between God and man.

2: Terms of Three: The contrast between the old and the new.
*In the old the priest had to enter the Holy of Holies yearly.
*Jesus on the other hand after had rose ascended to the right hand of God the father. This was done once for all.
* He ascended through the atmosphere then outer space and then heaven to take his seat.  The old Testament Priests did not sit down while in the Holy of Holies.
* We need to hold fast to our confession (Heb. 4:14)
